What happens in the MET (the world’s biggest men and women dress designing and fashion-focused charity gala), spills over to the streets. And taking a cue from this year’s theme, we might see Over the Top (OTT) looks become the rage for a short while.
For the unaware, this year’s Gilded Glamour theme paid homage to the short era at the close of the 19th century, the Gilded Age; a period where the richest either went the pompous route with their clothing or borderline eclectic – no in-between.
So, how does that translate to street fashion? Let’s take a sneak peek.
If you are referring to Merriam Webster, you might (wrongly) conclude that you need an all-gold outfit to rock gilded glam. While glamorous, that isn’t always sustainable. Experimenting with hair might be the next best thing. People are already going the ‘60s star route, adding volume to their locks or going the sleek route with an all-gelled look. It’s clear women dress designing is headed for a sparkling Renaissance.
Let’s face it, in this day and age, bejewelled-anything isn’t path-breaking. After all, we’ve had our fair share of bejewelled makeup from social media. But here’s one thing people are tapping into while channelling gilded glam- outrageous, embellished nails. We’re talking about stones, pearls, metal rings, textured nail clip-ons, everything under the sun that screams opulence.
Who said that Gilded had to be limited to outfits when we could just as easily extend it to makeup? We’re talking all-metallic makeup! And no, it isn’t just the lids. This time around, we’re talking about extending the eyeshadow to just below the waterline too. Inspo? Emma Chamberlain’s eye-conic red carpet look at the MET. We’re already seeing Instagram makeup gurus laud and replicate the look by swashing a bit of copper-toned metallic eyeshadow over the lid and below the water line; and adding a touch of shimmer with gold, just over the upper edge.
It may be time to stash away your dainty gold-toned jewellery and swap it for chunky frosted gold pieces for a while. At least, that’s what people who follow high fashion will tell you anyway. We are seeing street-style fashionistas pair their all-black (or neutral) toned fits with chunky jewellery and chains. And some are even going a bit risqué by adding pearls to the mix.
Corsets have been around for a hot minute, but now with the MET’s stamp of approval, they are here to stay. Street stylists to women dress designing professionals agree that corsets do a great job highlighting the waist, which is why corset tops are so popular. But now, with corsets making more leg-way, we can expect them to creep over dresses. Expect to see leather, lace, and netted corsets over dresses. After all, Pinterest fashionistas are already on board the trend.
If you don’t have ruffles on your feminine fits, are you really doing it right? Not quite, if you’ve been following the MET. With the big (and bold) theme of the year, the acceptable ruffles to outfit ratio ,ruffles have grown both in size and number. We’re already seeing Instagram models don ruffles on their minis and tops, and we’ll see more ruffles on floor-length pieces too.
Gigi Hadid’s ensemble may have been an ode to the Gilded Age, but the showstopper of the piece was undeniably the floor-length puffer cloak. And while the internet may be split over whether the cloak was MET-worthy, we think puffer jackets are making a comeback. This fall-winter fashion favourite, you know what it is!
Gilded Glamour extends far beyond outfits and makeup. It is a way of being, in essence, and fashion or not, people are lapping it up.
